Domestic Violence Court

Domestic Violence Courts throughout New York State adjudicate criminal matters involving spouses and intimate partners. Domestic Violence Courts include a dedicated judge and court room, specially trained staff, resource coordination, and on-site victim advocacy.

New York’s Domestic Violence Courts have been created as part of the justice system’s response to domestic violence.  A main component of the domestic violence court involves evaluating a defendant to see if there is a history of domestic violence and if so, sending the defendant for counseling and or therapy as deemed appropriate. If a defendant completes the agreed upon counseling or program, he or she will generally receive a more favorable resolution of the case.
